Frost Heaves to stage veterans camp

South Burlington, VT. The ABA Vermont Frost Heaves will hold an invitation-only tryout camp over the weekend of July 21, 22, 23 at Rice Memorial High School in South Burlington. The team will use the camp to choose the bulk of its opening night roster.

The Frost Heaves have extended invitations to players around the country and the world. Those expected to attend include former Eastern Michigan star Markus Austin, the third leading scorer in that school's history; Ron Christy, a two-time NCAA Division II first-team All-America at New York's Teikyo Post University; West Bolton, VT native Jesse Dunn, who played at Northeastern and Mount Mansfield Union High and now lives in California; Donald Moxley, a member of two Ivy League title teams at Penn; Demetric Shaw, a two-time Mid-American Conference defensive player of the year at Kent State; Kevin Harrington, who ranks among the all-time school leaders in 10 statistical categories at South Carolina-Spartanburg; Jordan Sabourin, a 7-footer European league veteran from Oakland University and cousin of UVM women's assistant coach Danielle Sabourin; J.D. Collins, the point guard who led West Virginia deep into the NCAA tournament the past two seasons; and Quinton Denyssen, the 6'7" captain of the South African national team.

Based on their play at the team's open tryout camp, which concluded on July 2, eleven other players have been invited back. Eight of the - Cortney Denson (Southern Vermont), Chris Dorsey (Lyndon State), David Hannah (Randolph High), Kerry Lyons (Milton High and Champlain College), Dana Martin (Stowe High), Jordan Ostrander (Swanton High and Champlain College), B.J. Robertson (Burlington High and St. Michael's) and Manny Robertson (Burlington High, Champlain College and Southern Connecticut) - have Vermont connections.

In addition, three other New England-based players - Nick Pelotte (a native of Maine who played at Plymouth State), David Stantial (a native of Massachusetts who played at Keene State) and John Huggins (an all-conference guard at American International) - earned callbacks.

The camp begins on Friday, July 21 at 3pm with sign-ins and measurements, followed by several hours of workouts. Two sessions are scheduled for Saturday, from 9am to 1pm and 3pm to 6pm, each with two games. A single session featuring two games follows on Sunday from 9am to 1pm. All games will be played under ABA rules. Assistant coach Wayne Lafley, strength and conditioning coach Scott Caulfield, and several local college and high school coaches will assist head coach Will Voigt at the camp, which is open to the press and the public.

The Vermont Frost heaves will split their 18 home games between the Barre Memorial Auditorium and Burlington's Memorial Auditorium when the season begins in November.
