GAME #18- July 9 - - Phoenix 94, Liberty 88: The Liberty stepped on the court ready to play Sunday afternoon coming out strong and starting off with an early lead...Once the Liberty scored its first basket, a 3-pointer from Becky Hammon, they continued the intensity and maintained the lead ending the quarter leading by seven... Phoenix began to chip away at the Liberty lead...Although Phoenix outscored the Liberty in the second quarter the teams entered the locker room with a score of 49-44 and the Liberty leading by five...Both teams returned to the court energized and while the Liberty was able to maintain their lead for the first few minutes, Phoenix fought back to come within one...The fourth quarter continued a head-to-head battle behind the scoring of All-Stars Becky Hammon (NY) and Diana Taurasi (PHO)...With 1:10 left in the game the Liberty led by three points...Taurasi responded with a lay-up followed by a foul shot converting a 3-point play to bring the game to an 80-80 tie with 56.9 seconds left in the game...Taurasi drove to the basket with 12.9 left but a blocked shot by Shameka Christon put the game into overtime...Barbara Farris made a single foul shot 24 seconds into the overtime period to put the Liberty up by one but that would be New York's only lead for the remainder of the game...Phoenix went on a 7-0 run to take the lead and with 30.5 seconds left Taurasi hit a 3-pointer to put the game out of reach for New York...Phoenix took the win with a score of 94-88...New York finished with five players in double figures led by Becky Hammon (24), Kelly Shumacher (11), Cathrine Kraayeveld (11), Erin Thorn (10) and Barbara Farris (10)...Phoenix was led behind the scoring of Diana Taurasi who scored a career-high 36 points and Cappie Pondexter who added 22 for the Mercury.

GAME #17- July 7 - Liberty 73, Sky 78: Chicago opened on a 7-1 run in the first frame, but New York battled back to tie the game up late in the quarter, 17-17...Despite Chicago getting a jump on the Liberty in the second quarter, veterans Becky Hammon and Cathrine Kraayeveld connected on a couple of key shots mid-quarter that kept the game close, 30-35...New York's aggressive attitude helped them head into the half down by three, 37-40...Both teams came out strong in the second half going shot-for-shot again led by their vets who accounted for all 15 of their points in the quarter...The final frame continued to be a head-to-head battle between the two teams as Deanna Jackson hit two early shots that gave Chicago a six point lead, 60-54...Chicago continued to put on the pressure as they jumped out to their first double-digit lead of the game at the 4:58 mark, 66-56...New York was able to cut it to a four point deficit (62-66) behind Hammon's perfect night from the line (5-5), but could not close out on the narrow loss...Chicago was led by Candice Dupree who finished with a game-high 20 points...New York recorded four players in double-figures, led by the hot hand of Hammon (18), Kraayeveld (14), Christon (12) and Farris (12).

New York vs. Seattle

New York will travel to Seattle for its first of a four-game West Coast trip...It is the first of two match-ups between the two teams this season...The game will be broadcast live on MSG Network...The Liberty is currently 4-14 holding the fifth place spot in the Eastern Conference...Seattle has a record of 10-9 and is currently in fourth place in the Western Conference

HISTORY MAKING ALLSTAR NIGHT: For the second time in WNBA history the All-Star Game was held at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night...The East dominated and came away with the victory, 98-82 for the first time in seven seasons ...In her second consecutive season, Becky Hammon was selected by the many fans across the country to be a starter on the East All-Star team...This was the third time in her career she was selected, but was unfortunately unable to participate, for the second time due to injury... As a starter in the 2005 All-Star Game, Hammon rattled off 18 points, six rebounds and four assists in 21 minutes...The East was led by the game's MVP, Connecticut Sun's Katie Douglas...Douglas finished with a team-high 16 points, five rebounds and four assists in 17 minutes...This was Douglas' first trip to the All-Star game in her carrier...

LEADING THE PACK: Although the team has been struggling early on in the season, Becky Hammon and Loree Moore are both having successful individual seasons ... Both players are in fact making their mark in the WNBA, ranking amongst the league's best in several statistical categories ... Hammon is currently the top free throw shooter in the WNBA, with a .957 average ... She is also ninth in the league in assists averaging 3.8 apg, seventh in minutes (32.8 mpg) and 11th in points (15.4 ppg) ... Hammon's point average and free-throw percentage are the highest in her eight-year career ... Moore is tenth in the WNBA, and first on the Liberty, in steals (1.6 spg) ... She is 12th in the WNBA in assists (3.7 apg) and second on the team ... Although just 5'9", Moore is currently the third highest rebounder on the Liberty with 4.7 boards a game ... She is behind the 6'5" Kelly Schumacher and 6'3" Barb Farris.
