Ndiaye-Diatta Rejoins Comets

July 14, 2006 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) Houston Comets

HOUSTON - The Houston Comets announced today that the team has re-signed forward/center Astou Ndiaye-Diatta to an injury exception contract. The WNBA granted the signing due to injuries to Dominique Canty (broken finger) and Tina Thompson (strained right calf).

Ndiaye-Diatta (6-3, Southern Nazarene '97) holds career averages of 8.1 points and 4.4 rebounds in 148 (98 starts) games with the Detroit Shock (138) and Indiana Fever (10). She first signed with Houston as a free agent on April 17 before being waived prior to the regular season on May 19.

In her previous WNBA season, she missed the majority of 2004 recovering from offseason surgery and nursing a bruised right knee. Her 2003 campaign was shortened to just 11 games after giving birth to triplets in April of that year. Her best season came in 2001 when she averaged career highs with 11.8 points, 1.5 assists and 0.9 blocks, along with 5.3 rebounds. She also achieved single-game career highs in points (27), assists (5), blocks (4), steals (3), field goals made (11), 3-point field goals made (2) and free throws made (5) that year.

This season marks the 10th Anniversary for the Comets and the WNBA, making it the longest-running professional women's league in history. The Comets next home game will be on July 20 vs. the Minnesota Lynx.
