Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

FORT MYERS, FL (July 3, 2006) - This is the type of effort that got the Fort Myers Miracle within one game of the first half championship. This is more of an effort Miracle manager Kevin Boles was looking for when his club started the second half a week and a half ago. That effort, a solid pitching performance, timely hits, and flawless defense got the Miracle a 5-1 victory over the Dunedin Blue Jays on Monday evening at Hammond Stadium in front of 6,753.

The Miracle, who improved to 5-6 in the second half, finally had all the pieces in their line up with the additions of David Winfree and Steve Tolleson and Alexi Casilla returning after a few days off with a toe injury. It showed in the first inning as the Miracle exploded for three runs. Casilla led off with a single to right, moved to second on a wild pitch and stole third. One out later he scored on a single by Trevor Plouffe. With two outs Plouffe scored on a double by Brock Peterson who then scored on a single by Tolleson.

Miracle starter Anthony Swarzak took over from there getting a quality outing allowing just one run in 6.0 innings on four hits while walking two and striking out two. The only blip on his radar came in the second when he gave up a double to Eric Arnold, who moved to third on a ground out and scored on a sac fly. Swarzak earned his fourth win of the season, his first since May 31.

The Miracle tacked on some insurance runs in the sixth and seventh. In the sixth Tolleson led off with a double and with one out scored on a single by Deacon Burns. Tolleson finished the night 3-4 with two doubles, RBI and a run scored. In the seventh Winfree hit his first homer in a Miracle uniform, a solo shot to left.

Chris Schutt finished off the game for the Miracle tossing 3.0 shutout innings allowing just one hit while walking two and striking out four.

The Miracle now head out on the road for a three game series against the Tampa Yankees at Legends Field on Tuesday night at Hammond Stadium. The Miracle send RHP Josh Hill (4-2, 5.76) against Yankees RHP Brett Smith (6-5, 3.25).
