Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Vero Beach, FL) - Despite home runs from the Dodgers first two hitters of the night, the St. Lucie Mets rallied to down the Dodgers 3-2 at Holman Stadium Monday night. All runs in the game were supplied by homers, with the Mets' Josh Peterson delivering a 2-run blow in the 8th that proved to be the decisive blast. The series ends on July 4 at St. Lucie with a 6:00 PM start.

The game began promisingly enough for the Dodgers. Xavier Paul and Blake DeWitt led off the bottom of the 1st with back-to-back home runs. Mets' starter Phil Humber, a former 1st Round draft pick of New York recovering from Tommy John surgery, settled down after that and allowed just two more hits over four innings. Vero Beach would place only two baserunners in scoring position the rest of the way, despite five errors from the Mets infield.

Scott Elbert started the for the Dodgers and followed up his near no-hitter Wednesday with four shutout innings against the Mets. Elbert allowed just two singles and struck out four while walking three. Mike Megrew followed with two scoreless relief innings before the Dodgers ran into trouble.

Julio Pimentel entered in the 7th. He struck out his first batter, but Caleb Stewart smacked a home run to left bringing the Mets within 2-1. Pimentel then retired four in a row before issuing a 2-out walk to Mike Carp. Peterson then blasted a home run to center on a 3-1 pitch that put the Mets ahead.

Vero Beach has now lost six in a row. It is the team's third losing streak of six or more games this season. The one-run loss was the Dodgers' 24th of the year. St. Lucie improved to a league-best 17-4 in one-run games.
