Detroit Shock News Release
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Detroit Shock All-Star forward Cheryl Ford will make a donation of $3.00 for every rebound she grabs during the remainder of the 2006 WNBA season to the Children's Tumor Foundation. Ford is the WNBA's premier rebounder, having lead the league with 9.8 rebounds per game in 2005 and currently leading the league again this season while on pace to set the WNBA record for single season rebound average with 12.4 boards per contest, through June 18.
"I'm proud to be involved with something as special as Rebounds for Research," said Ford. "Our goal is to raise money and public awareness about children's tumor research. Hopefully, with the help of other athletes and all WNBA fans, we will be able to raise enough money to eventually find a cure for this disorder."
In addition to the donations, Ford will appear in a public service announcement to support Neurofibromatosis (NF) research and is supplying 10 seats for children at two home games this season to children affected by NF. Ford captured the WNBA rebounding crown in 2005 for the first time after finishing second in the league during each of her first two seasons with averages of 10.4 rebounds in 2003 and 9.6 rebounds in 2004. With just over three full years of WNBA experience, Ford notched 1,000 career rebounds on June 7, 2006 at Los Angeles. As the Shock's all-time leading rebounder, she is the first Detroit player to reach the mark as a member of the Shock and the second youngest player in league history to do so. Detroit's Swin Cash, second on the Shock's all-time rebounding list, participated in the Rebounds for Research program last season.
