Red Wings bats beat Indians

The Red Wings pounded out 13 hits to back a fine effort by starter Scott Baker, in a 8-3 win Thursday night over the Indianapolis Indians at Frontier Field. Garrett Jones had three hits and Shawn Wooten homered to pace the Rochester offense.

The Red Wings gave Baker a pair of first inning runs to work with Thursday. With two outs, Josh Rabe singled and scored on Kevin West's RBI double. West scored when Ruben Sierra followed with a run-scoring single against Indians starter Marty McLeary.

Baker was superb, allowing just two baserunners in the first three inninngs. In the fourth, the Indians put together three straight singles to get on the board and make it a 2-1 game. Adam Boeve had the RBI single for Indianapolis. They added another run in the 6th on a home run by Mike Edwards.

The Wings busted out of the 2-2 tie with six runs in the 6th inning. Singles by Gil Velazquez and Rabe opened the inning followed by two walks to West and Sierra. Jones had the big single bringing in two more runs, and Chris Heintz added another RBI on a groundout. With two outs in the inning Glenn Williams singled and Wooten brought him in with a two-run home run making the Wings' lead 8-2.

Baker finished the day with six innings pitched, six hits and two earned runs allowed. Baker struck out nine and allowed two walks. Kevin Cameron pitched two innings in relief of Baker, allowing one run in the eighth inning. Beau Kemp pitched a scoreless ninth and Glenn Williams made a great backhanded stop and flip to second to record the final out.
