Lugnuts Put Spell On Wizards

LANSING - In the words of Dorothy, there's no place like home.The Lansing Lugnuts returned to Oldsmobile Park on Saturday night after dropping four straight on the road and pummeled the Fort Wayne Wizards 11-1 before a season high 9,847 fans. Lansing smacked a season high 16 hits in the win.

The Lugnuts began the barrage in the second inning. Jacob Butler scored on an Anthony Hatch double to left field to make the score 1-0. Hatch was plated later when Jesus Gonzalez singled to right-center field to push the lead to 2-0. After moving to second on a Luke Hetherington single, Gonzalez scampered home when Jesus Lopez committed an error on a ground ball to make the score 3-0.

Lansing added another run in the third when Hatch blasted a solo homer to right field to give the Lugnuts a 4-0 advantage. Hatch finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBI.

After plating two in the fifth, two more runs came home in the sixth when Cory Patton belted a home run off of the batter's eye in center field to make the score 8-1. Patton also finished 3-for-5 but had three RBI in the contest.

A three run seventh capped the scoring for Lansing, highlighted by three RBI singles by Yuber Rodriguez, Gonzalez, and Anthony Garibaldi.

Sean Stidfole picked up the win for Lansing, throwing 3 1/3 innings and allowing just one hit in relief.

Grant Varnell suffered the loss for the Wizards, going just four innings and allowing six runs on ten hits.

Lansing (24-17) and Fort Wayne (21-19) will play the second game of the four game set on Sunday afternoon at Oldsmobile Park. Chi-Hung Cheng will take the hill for Lansing, while Joel Santo will hurl for the Wizards. Sunday is a Lansing Board of Water and Light Autograph Day, with gates opening at 12:30 p.m. It is also a Meijer Kids Day, and Pepsi Kids Run the Bases will take place after the game. First pitch is set for 2:05.
