Captains' rally falls short

Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, Ohio)- The Delmarva Shorebirds held off the Lake County Captains late inning comeback attempt to nab a 7-6 victory Monday night at Classic Park.
The Shorebirds (16-13) took a 7-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning. Captains designated hitter John Roberts singled to begin the inning, and then later scored on Matt Fornasiere's single to right making the score 7-4. Omar Casillas followed with a sacrifice fly plating Constanza for a 7-5 score after eight innings.
The Captains (17-14) made a valiant effort to comeback in the ninth. Chris De La Cruz scored on Juan Valdes's single to center making the score 7-6. Niuman Romero walked to load the bases for the Captains with two outs, but Delmarva closer Jim Hoey got Fornasiere to groundout to end the ballgame and the attempted comeback.
The Captains pounded out 16 hits in the effort as opposed to the Shorebirds five hits, stranding 16 runners on base.
Captains reliever Cody Bunkelman (0-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up four runs in the top of the eighth. Blake Owen (3-1) earned his third victory of the season hurling two-thirds of an inning in relief. Jim Hoey picked up his seventh save of the season.
The Captains begin a six game road trip starting in Hagerstown on Tuesday night. RHP Jim Deters will take the hill for the Captains. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. (WELW AM 1330, WKNR AM 850).
