DeWitt, Wigdahl return to Salem

April 20, 2006 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release

SALEM, VA -- The Houston Astros have added RHP Anthony DeWitt and LHP Jeff Wigdahl to the Salem Avalanche roster. Both DeWitt and Wigdahl spent time with Salem in 2005. To make room for the additions, the Astros have

placed RHP Ronnie Martinez on the disabled list, (retroactive to April 17th) and released RHP Ben Diggins.

In 2005, DeWitt started his second professional season with the Avalanche. Over the course of the season, he became a dependable reliever, tabulating a 6-2 record with a 4.15 ERA in 31 games. DeWitt, a native of Pass Christian, MS, spent a brief time away from the club in 2005 to tend to his family after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast.

Wigdahl came to Salem in late June of 2005, after a magnificent first half as closer with the Lexington Legends of the South Atlantic League. With Salem, Wigdahl appeared in 22 games over the course of the second half of the season. He compiled an 0-1 record, with a 3.98 ERA and four saves.

Neither Ronnie Martinez nor Ben Diggins have pitched with Salem in 2006.

Diggins was drafted with the 17th overall pick of the 2000 draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers. After reaching Hi-A in the Dodgers system, he was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers organization in July of 2002. After a brief stint with the Huntsville Stars of the Southern League, Diggins was called up to the big leagues, starting five games in Milwaukee in 2002. Injuries plagued Diggins in the coming seasons and he was acquired by the Astros via the Triple-A phase of the Rule V Draft in December of 2005.
