Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced today that they claimed linebacker Kyries Hebert off waivers from the Ottawa Renegades franchise.
"He's the kind of difference-maker and an impact player on defence that is too good to pass up," said Bombers G.M. Brendan Taman. "We're very excited to get him. He's going to be a huge upgrade to our linebacking corps and will add substantially to our special teams unit."
Hebert (6-2, 217, Louisana-Lafayette '01, DOB: Oct. 9, 1980 in Eunice, Louisana) is rated as one of the top young linebackers in the CFL.
The former Renegade âbacker led Ottawa in defensive tackles (66) and tied for the league lead in special teams tackles (29) in 2005. He also had three interceptions, returning two of them for touchdowns, and added three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, two pass knockdowns and one quarterback sack. Herbert was the CFL Rogers Player of the Week for Week 20 with a three-interception performance in a win over the Toronto Argonauts that set a franchise record for picks in a single game.
It was an impressive follow-up to his rookie season with Ottawa in '04 when Hebert collected 56 tackles, 27 special teams tackles, one pass knockdown, one tackle for a loss and two interceptions.
Hebert spent parts of two seasons in the NFL before signing as a free agent with Ottawa. He attended training camp with the Minnesota Vikings in 2002 before being released. He subsequently signed with the Houston Texans and spent time on their practice roster. He attended training camp with the Texans in '03 before being released.
Hebert is a graduate of the Lousiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns, with whom he had three outstanding collegiate seasons. He didn't miss a single game as a member of the Cajuns and led the team in tackles in each of his three seasons. He was a three-time member of the All-Sun Belt Conference Team.
