Seattle Storm News Release

SEATTLE - The Seattle Storm today named Heidi VanDerveer as assistant coach for the 2006 WNBA season, Storm Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel Anne Donovan announced.

"We are so fortunate to have Heidi join our staff," said Donovan. "Heidi has tremendous experience in the WNBA as both an assistant and as a head coach, as well as many years in the college game. Her complete knowledge and history in the WNBA and her solid reputation with the players she has coached make her the perfect fit for our Storm team."

A native of Chautauqua, N.Y., VanDerveer was named head coach of the Minnesota Lynx in 2002 and served as an assistant under Brian Agler for three seasons prior. VanDerveer was head coach of the Sacramento Monarchs in 1999 and served as an assistant for the club in 1998.

Prior to joining the Monarchs, VanDerveer served as the head women's basketball coach at Eastern Washington University for three seasons. Her tenure at EDU was highlighted by back-to-back postseason appearances (1995 and 1996) in the Big Sky Conference tournament. Prior to taking the helm at EDU, VanDerveer served as an assistant for six seasons (1988 through 1994) at the University of South Carolina.

As a graduate assistant under Pat Summitt at the University of Tennessee, VanDerveer played an active role in the school's national championship in 1987 and its 1988 Final Four appearance.

"I'm thrilled about the opportunity to work with Anne, her staff and the Storm team," said VanDerveer. "With such a talented staff and team, I look forward to helping the team work toward another WNBA Championship."

The Storm will open their 2006 season against Western Conference rival Los Angeles at KeyArena on Sunday, May 21 at 6 p.m. The following Tuesday, May 23, Seattle will host the Houston Comets at 8 p.m. on ESPN2.
