Barons Legends Among AHL Hall of Fame Inductees

January 6, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Barons News Release

CLEVELAND - The American Hockey League announced that former Barons legends Fred Glover and Johnny Bower will be members of the inaugural class of inductees into the American Hockey League Hall of Fame.

Glover played for the original Cleveland Barons from 1953-68 and coached them from 1962-68. As a player, Glover appeared in seven Calder Cups, winning five, and was the Most Valuable Player an AHL-record three times. With the Barons, Glover appeared in six consecutive All-Star games. He appeared in 1,201 games during his 20-year career registering 520 goals and 814 assists for 1,334 points. Glover is second in AHL history in goals, assists, and points. His 16 seasons with the Barons are the most with one team in AHL history.

His number 9 was retired by the club in 1969 and Glover was inducted into the Cleveland Hockey Legends Ring of Honor in its inaugural year in 2003.

Bower virtually wrote the AHL goaltending record books in his 9 seasons with Cleveland. Holding the AHL record with 359 regular season wins, 284 of his victories came in Barons Blue. Bower became known for the goose-egg as his 45 shutouts are still an AHL record, as is his streak of 249:51 that stands as the league's longest shut-out streak. Bower won the Les Cunningham Award, given to the AHL's Most Valuable Player, twice with the Barons and once with the Providence Reds.

Following his AHL career, Bower played 11 seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, leading the team to three consecutive Stanley Cups.

In honor of his contributions to hockey, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1976. Bower's number 1 jersey was also retired by the Barons and the Maple Leafs and he was inducted into the Cleveland Hockey Legends Ring of Honor in 2004.

The first class of inductees will be honored at the 2006 Rbk AHL All-Star Classic in Winnipeg Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.

In a unique tradition to make the AHL available to the widest possible audience, the AHL Hall of Fame will be housed on-line at www.ahlhalloffame.com and will be accessible to fans worldwide with the click of a mouse as the newest member of the AHL Internet Network. The Network also includes theahl.com, caldercup.com, and all 27 official team sites, and hosts more than 150 million page views each year. The AHL Hall of Fame site will be launched in conjunction with the Feb. 1 induction ceremony.

The Barons will return to National City Rink at the Q on Friday, January 6, when they take on the Milwaukee Admirals. The first 3,000 fans in attendance will receive a set of Barons team trading cards. Tickets for the games are on sale now at The Q Box Office and all Ticketmaster locations. For more information contact the Front Office at 216.420.0000 or Crash The Net at www.clevelandbarons.net.
