Stockton Lightning News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - Stockton Pro Football has announced it has hired Richard Davis as its inaugural head coach for the upcoming 2006 season, Stockton Football Franchise Group team president Dan Chapman announced today. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"We're very excited to bring Richard aboard as our first ever head coach in Stockton Pro Football history," said Chapman. "His vast expertise and credentials garnered through a very impressive run in af2 will be a much-welcomed addition to the organization."
Davis will be introduced to the media today at a 2pm (PT) press conference at Stockton's Valley Brew Restaurant.
Davis, who holds a career 41-23 coaching record (fifth winningest all-time in af2 history), carries five years of coaching experience in the af2 ranks, most recently serving the Albany Conquest for the 2005 season. His track record for winning was greatly enhanced by an impressive 31-19 overall record (including playoffs) with the Richmond Speed, from 2000-03.
Under Davis' direction, Richmond also collected 27 wins in a two-year span, which is the second-highest two-year win total in af2 history.
Davis guided the Speed to two consecutive playoff appearances in 2001 and 2002, and led the Speed to an af2 title threshold in 2001 with an Arena Cup Championship appearance.
In total, Davis carries 11 years of coaching experience at the professional and collegiate levels. After his collegiate playing days at Cisco Junior College and NAIA power Rocky Mountain College (Mont.), his offensive expertise helped guide the NFL Europe's London Monarchs to a World Cup title in 1991, leading to further coaching opportunities. He served as an offensive coordinator at Langston University (Okla.) (NAIA) in 1992, and as a quarterback coach at University of Connecticut (NCAA) in 1994.
Davis is no stranger to the California area either, where as a player, he helped College of the Desert to a Southern California Bowl title in 1989.
Davis branched his on-field experience into the front office ranks, serving the CFL's San Antonio Texas as the team's Vice President of Operations from 1995-96. Davis graduated from University of Central Oklahoma, receiving his B.A. in education.
Stockton Pro Football season tickets, mini-plans, group-packages and individual tickets will be announced on-sale at an impending date.
