NHL and ECHL tours the Stanley Cup for charity
October 25, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release
NEW YORK - The National Hockey League will join with the ECHL and tour the
Stanley Cup to 20 ECHL teams between Oct. 26 and Dec. 17 to help raise
money for hurricane relief efforts.
The tour will begin with a visit to the Johnstown Chiefs, the affiliate
team of last seasonís Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning. The final
tour stop is a visit to the Greenville Grrrowl in South Carolina on Dec.
17.
A complete list of tour stops follows.
All proceeds will benefit charities assisting in hurricane relief efforts
including, but not limited to, the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and United
Way. This tour is another addition to the National Hockey Leagueís
charitable efforts, which have included a joint donation with the NHL
Players' Association of $1 million to the Red Cross for Hurricane Katrina
relief.
Hockey's most famous trophy will be the center of various activities
throughout the tour: visits to schools, media appearances and private
showings. The "Keeper of the Cup" from the Hockey Hall of Fame also will be
available to answer questions and talk about the history of hockey. Fans
will have the opportunity to have their photograph taken with the Stanley
Cup and make a monetary donation towards hurricane relief.
"I would like to thank Commissioner Gary Bettman and the National Hockey
League, the NHL Players' Association and the Hockey Hall of Fame for their
role in raising the level of awareness and assistance for people in both
Mississippi and Southeast Texas, two ECHL markets hard hit by Hurricanes
Katrina and Rita. We encourage fans in all participating cities to come see
professional sportís most famous trophy and help in fundraising at the same
time," said ECHL Commissioner Brian McKenna.
