Stanley Cup On Its Way Back To Toledo
October 24, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Toledo Walleye News Release
(Toledo, Ohio) Toledo Storm of the ECHL announced today that the Stanley Cup will be making an appearance Saturday night October 29, 2005 at the Toledo Sports Arena. Toledo plays the Johnstown Chiefs that night.
The Cup will be on display inside the Exhibition Hall of the Toledo Sports Arena throughout Saturday's contest against Johnstown. The National Hockey League is having the Stanley Cup tour ECHL cities to help raise money for Hurricane Relief. Toledo is the second stop on said tour. Fans will be able to see the Cup and have photos taken with the greatest prize in hockey for a monetary donation to the cause. All proceeds from the night will go to the United Way Hurricane Response and Recovery Fund. This will be the second time in Toledo for the Cup in the last 8 months as the Cup was in Toledo as part of Hockey Hall of Fame Weekend February 25th and 26th.
"This should be a great night for our fans and the city of Toledo," said President Barry Soskin. "The Stanley Cup is the greatest trophy in sports, and we are proud to have it coming here again to help out a great cause."
The Stanley Cup is awarded to the NHL's Playoff Champion, which symbolizes professional hockey supremacy. The Cup dates back to 1892 when at a dinner of the Ottawa Amateur Athletic Association Lord Kilcoursie, a player on the Ottawa Rebels hockey club from Government House, delivered a message on behalf of Lord Stanley, the Earl of Preston and Governor General of Canada stating that there should be a Challenge Cup competed for every year to determine a champion. The first winner of the Stanley Cup was the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) hockey club, champions of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada for 1893. Ironically, Lord Stanley never witnessed a championship game nor attended a presentation of his trophy, having returned to his native England in the midst of the 1893 season.
Toledo is at Johnstown Wednesday night before returning home Friday against
Dayton. Contact the Storm office at 419-691-0200 or visit
