Atlanta Gladiators News Release


A Blanking:

Rookie netminder Tuomas Tarkki posted 34 saves in a 1-0 shootout loss in his first professional start for the Gladiators on Friday night against the Charlotte Checkers. Despite not picking up the win, Tarkki is credited with a shutout for turning aside all of Charlotte's regulation and overtime shots.

Back to Back:

Sean Fields followed up Tuomas Tarkki's shutout performance on opening night with a 6-0 blanking of the Pensacola Ice Pilots on Saturday night for his first win of the season. Fields finished last season with one shutout for the Gladiators while posting a 21-7-2 record.

Leading the Team:

Forward Jeff Campbell leads the team in scoring through the first two games of the season posting a goal and 2 assists for the Gladiators. Pascal Pelletier leads the team in goals posting 2 in the Gladiators 6-0 win on Saturday over the Pensacola Ice Pilots. Campbell finished 2nd in scoring on the Gladiators last year with 63 points and shared first in goals scored with 30 on the season.

Called Up:

Jared Ross appeared in the Gladiators season opener and was called up to the Chicago Wolves of the AHL on Saturday. The rookie forward attended the Wolves training camp this fall. Ross did not register a point in the Wolves 2-1 loss against Iowa on Saturday night

In the Show!

Former Gladiators netminder Adam Berkhoel recorded his first NHL win on Saturday night making 34 saves to help the Atlanta Thrashers to a 4-3 win over the New Jersey Devils. Berkhoel is now 1-1-0 in the NHL. The netminder finished with a 9-10-5 record last year with the Gladiators while posting a .918 save percentage and a 2.45 goals against average.

From Chicago:

Forward Guillaume Desbiens was assigned to the Gladiators from the Chicago Wolves of the AHL on October 21st and appeared in both of the Gladiators games this weekend. The rookie did not register a point with the Gladiators in either contest. He finished last season with Rouyn-Noranda of the QMJHL with 43 points in 56 games.

Schedule Poster Night:

Friday is team schedule poster night when the Gladiators host the Augusta Lynx at the Arena at Gwinnett Center at 7:35 p.m. The first 2,000 fans will receive a free Gladiators team schedule poster courtesy of the Bell South Yellow Pages, Coca-Cola and the Printing Trade Co.

October 21st, Charlotte 1, Gladiators 0 - SOL

Rookie netminder Tuomas Tarkki made 34 saves to record a shutout in his first professional start but it wasn't enough to help the Gladiators past the Charlotte Checkers in both team's season openers. Charlotte picked up the win in a shootout as Dusty Jamieson was the only shooter to score during the shootout tallying a goal in the second round.

October 22nd, Gladiators 6, Pensacola 0 - W

Pascal Pelletier scored twice for the Gladiators while Sean Fields made 38 saves to record the shutout win for Gwinnett. The Gladiators have not allowed a goal in regulation yet this season while posting 2 goals in 10 power play opportunities in the victory. Brad Schell, Scott Mifsud and Matt York each finished with 2 points in the win. Jeff Campbell recorded a team high 3 points off of a goal and 2 assists for the Gladiators.

This Week's Game:

Friday, October 28th vs. Augusta Lynx, 7:35 p.m. - wdun.com

The Gladiators face the Lynx for the first of nine meeting this season. Gwinnett leads the all time series against the Lynx by a 18-14-2 mark. The Gladiators put a team record 67 shots up against Augusta in a 3-2 overtime win last season on April 8th.

Practices at the IceForum in Duluth are open to the general public. Arena at Gwinnett Center practices are not open to the general public. Media members wishing to attend practice at the Arena should contact the Gladiators PR staff at 770-497-5106.
