Team Captains Announced

San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - Veteran defenseman Jonathon Shockey will remain the San Diego Gulls' team captain, while Guillaume Fournier and Steve Hildenbrand have been named the alternates, head coach Martin St. Amour announced Monday.
Shockey was named team captain late last season and begins his first full season as San Diego's leader in 2005-06. Last season Shockey recorded 15 points (0g, 15a) and 101 penalty minutes in 56 games. His 15 assists were a new career high, breaking his old mark of 14, attained in 2002-03 for the West Coast Hockey League's Idaho Steelheads.
"We're certainly glad to have Shocks back this season," St. Amour said. "He really stepped up as a leader last season on the ice and in the locker room. He really could've been the captain all of last season."
Shockey has spent the majority of his seven-year professional career in the now-defunct WCHL, including three seasons with the Steelheads. He's also played 36 career games in the International and American hockey leagues. The veteran blue-liner has racked up 113 points (20g, 93a) and 1,159 penalty minutes in 453 career pro games.
Fournier begins his second season with the Gulls after recording 35 points (16g, 19a) and 27 penalty minutes last season, his rookie year. His 35 points was tops among all Gulls freshmen and his 10 power-play goals was tied for second among all ECHL rookies.
"We're very excited to have Guillaume back," St. Amour said. "He was one of four players that I was really happy with last season. He showed a lot of leadership and intensity in his game and we need more of that on our hockey team."
This is Hildenbrand's first season with San Diego and third in the ECHL. He joins the Gulls after splitting last season with the Johnstown Chiefs and Pee Dee Pride. In 56 games combined with the two clubs, he notched 51 points (16g, 35a) and 88 penalty minutes. Hildenbrand also appeared in three games for the American Hockey League's Rochester Americans last season.
"Steve is a gutsy player and will be a great leader for this team," St. Amour said. "He's a very intense player both on and off the ice and is a great addition for our club. I think the fans will really appreciate his play and leadership qualities throughout the season."
The Gulls open the regular season Friday in Alaska and open their home schedule Saturday, Nov. 5 against Stockton. All games can be heard live on KLSD 1360AM and www.sandiegogulls.com with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. Most games can also be viewed on the Gulls' web site, courtesy of B2 Networks.
