Fresno Falcons News Release

FRESNO, Calif. - The San Jose Sharks have assigned two players to the Fresno Falcons: goaltender Jamie Holden and defenseman Matt Deschamps. Both are entering their first full season as professionals and attended the Sharks' rookie camp, the NHL club's main training camp, and the Cleveland Barons' American Hockey League training camp before arriving in Fresno.

Holden will make his professional debut with the Falcons following a very accomplished collegiate career both on and off the ice at Quinnipiac (Conn.) University. As a junior in 2003-04, he was named First Team All-Atlantic Hockey and garnered the conference's Goaltender of the Year Award. As a senior last season, he was named the conference's Goaltender of the Week five times and was tabbed insidecollegehockey.com's National Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 25 - 31 following a 45-save performance in a 2-1 victory against 11th-ranked Dartmouth College. He finished his Quinnipiac career as the school's all-time leader in saves (2,879), goals against average (2.49), wins (59), shutouts (7), and save percentage (.921).

The Terrace, British Columbia, native's off-ice achievements are as impressive, if not more so. Holden graduated last spring with a degree in biology and was named the 2004-05 Quinnipiac Senior Male Scholar Athlete for carrying a 3.88 grade point average. After his junior campaign, he was chosen Atlantic Hockey's Scholar Athlete of the Year and was a three-time Academic All-America nominee. Finally, Holden was named a 2005 ESPN the Magazine District 1 Academic All-America At-Large selection for his efforts on the ice and in the classroom during the 2004-05 academic year.

Although he is officially entering his rookie campaign, Deschamps received a taste of pro hockey last spring when he appeared in four games with the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies. Hailing from Poughkeepsie, N.Y., he spent four years at the national hockey powerhouse University of Maine, where he recorded 16 points (3g-13a) and 100 penalty minutes in 111 games as a stay-at-home defenseman.

"Both Jamie and Matt got a good look by San Jose, and we'll do our part in trying to help the Sharks develop their skills so they can reach higher levels of hockey," said Falcons head coach and general manager Matt Thomas. "Jamie had a great college career and is a goalie that the Sharks plan to keep an eye on. Matt is a good, young, stay-at-home d-man that will add speed to our back end, is very aware defensively, and has the ability to jump into the play."

The Falcons also added forward Alex Motley to their training camp roster, who is signed on a tryout agreement.
