Avalanche Assign Five To San Diego

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls announced Thursday that goaltenders Tyler Weiman and Tom Lawson, forwards Frantisek Skladany and David Svagrovsky and defenseman Tomas Slovak have been assigned by the Colorado Avalanche.
All players began training camp with the Avalanche before being sent to the American Hockey League's Lowell Lock Monsters. To view each player's complete profile, log onto www.sandiegogulls.com.
Weiman, 21, spent last season (his rookie year) with the Central Hockey League's Colorado Eagles, posting a 33-6-5 record with a 1.80 goals-against average and .938 save percentage. The 5-foot-11-inch, 180-pound native of Lloydminster, Alberta led the CHL in wins, GAA, save percentage and shutouts (eight), while being named the league's Outstanding Goaltender and Rookie of the Year. Weiman was Colorado's fifth round pick in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
Lawson, 26, played last season for the AHL's Hershey Bears, posting a 10-14-0 record with a 2.84 GAA and .914 save percentage. The 6-foot-5-inch, 200-pound native of Whitby, Ontario has also spent time in the ECHL and United Hockey League. Lawson was named the UHL's Best Goaltender and Playoff MVP in 2002-03 after leading the Fort Wayne Komets to the Colonial Cup Championship.
Svagrovsky, 20, begins his second professional season after spending his rookie campaign last year with Colorado of the CHL. In 35 games for the Eagles, the 6-foot-4-inch, 210-pound native of Prague, Czech Republic recorded four points (1g, 3a) and 55 penalty minutes. Svagrovsky was Colorado's fourth round pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
Skladany, 23, comes to San Diego after splitting time last season with Hershey and the UHL's Quad City Mallards. In 50 games for Quad City, the 6-foot, 185-pounder from Martin, Slovakia notched 20 points (9g, 11a). Skladany, who played for Slovakia at the 2000 World Junior Championships, was Colorado's fifth round pick in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.
Slovak, 22, spent the majority of last season with Kosice HC in Slovakia and also appeared in one game for Hershey. In 33 games for Kosice HC, the 6-foot-1-inch, 205-pounder from Kosice, Slovakia netted 14 points (3g, 11a) while amassing 42 penalty minutes. Slovak, who played for Slovakia at the 2003 World Junior Championships, was originally drafted by the Nashville Predators in the second round (42nd overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He signed with the Avalanche as a free agent in July 2003.
The Gulls officially open training camp for the 2005-06 season Friday at the Iceoplex, located in Escondido. All workouts are open to fans and members of the media.
The majority of the other workouts will be held at the San Diego Ice Arena in Mira Mesa. After Saturday's practice in Escondido a preseason Season Ticket Holder Rally will be held, which will include a 45-minute meet-and-greet autograph session. For more information call 619-224-4625 ext. 7.
