D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. (September 23, 2005) - United for D.C., the charitable arm of D.C. United, announced today that it grossed more than $48,000 at the Fourth Annual United for D.C. Celebrity Golf Tournament, presented by United Bank. Proceeds from the September 19th event, held at the Old Hickory Golf Club in Woodbridge, VA, will benefit the charity's initiatives - including United Reads, Kicks for Kids and United Community Grants - promoting literacy, healthy lifestyles and life skills for youth in the Washington, DC area.
"We are extremely pleased with the support we continue to receive from our corporate sponsors and individual fans," said Catherine Marquette, Executive Director of United for D.C. and United's Director of Community Relations. "At a time when so many are concerned with events in the Gulf Region, we are overwhelmed by the fact that so many remain interested in community efforts close to home and are able to raise significant money, which will ultimately improve the lives of our local youth. The D.C. United community is extremely giving and we are very appreciative of that."
For the second consecutive season, United Bank served as a presenting sponsor of the event. Turner Construction joined the tournament this year as an all-hole sponsor. GEICO, Tuesday's Children, American Baseball Capital, FedEx, Arent Fox, Acordia, The Washington Examiner, Merrifield Garden Center, The Bomstein Agency, Global Sports and Entertainment and Aramark were hole sponsors, while Honda sponsored a hole-in-one contest. Pepsi, Sierra Mist, Aquafina and Budweiser donated beverages, while Chipotle and R&R Catering provided lunch and dinner, respectively, at the event.
Team and individual prizes were awarded again this year. First place went to American Baseball Capital, a two-year one-hole sponsor of the event, led by goalkeeper Troy Perkins. Second place went to Miller & Long, led by rookie Nick Van Sicklen. Third place went to Acordia of Virginia, a first-time one-hole sponsor of the tournament, led by Comcast SportsNet's Russ Thaler. Last place went to D.C. United's own foursome of Christian Gomez, Facundo Erpen, Tim Merritt and Andrew Weber. Assistant Coach Mark Simpson won Closest to the Pin, Chris Randisi and Joanne Blair won Men's and Women's Longest Drive and Brian Parker won the Putting Contest. No one won the Hole In One Contest.
Celebrity participants included: United players Freddy Adu, Bobby Boswell, Brian Carroll, Facundo Erpen, Christian Gomez, Josh Gros, Shawn Kuykendall, Tim Merritt, Jaime Moreno, Matt Nickell, Ben Olsen, Troy Perkins, Jason Thompson, Nick Van Sicklen, Jamil Walker and Andrew Weber; technical staff members Kevin Payne, Dave Kasper, Tommy Soehn and Mark Simpson; Dave Johnson, John Harkes and Russ Thaler from United's ComcastSportsNet broadcasts; United alumni Kris Kelderman, A.J. Wood and Marco Etcheverry; US Soccer coaches Bruce Arena and Curt Onalfo; MLS Alumni Garth Lagerway; former Buffalo Bill Scott Norwood; and WJFK radio personality JP Flaim. Other members of D.C. United's team attended the event's awards reception held at the conclusion of the golf tournament.
