Long Island Ducks News Release

(Central Islip, N.Y. Sept. 20, 2005) - The Long Island Ducks staved off a late rally by the Newark Bears to take a 12-11 victory in front of 5,665 fans at Citibank Park on Tuesday night. On the evening, the two teams combined for 23 runs on 37 hits, six of which were home runs. The win improves Long Island to 35-30 in the season's second half. The Ducks now lead second place Nashua by four games in the North Division standings. The Ducks magic number to clinch the second half North Division crown is one, meaning any Long Island win or Pride loss clinches a playoff berth for the Flock.

The Ducks began their offensive attack in the first inning with a solo blast by Henry Rodriguez and never trailed. The Flock tallied a hit in each of their eight at-bats and scored in each of the first seven frames. Their most productive stretch was fourth through sixth innings where they scored eight runs on nine hits. Highlighting the barrage were a pair of two-run home runs by Pete Rose Jr. (fifth inning) and Rodriguez (sixth). Lancaster rallied for eight runs over their final three at-bats, but had the door closed on their comeback when Quincy Foster grounded out to first base to end the game.

Bill Pulsipher (2-1) picked up the win after allowing seven runs on 11 hits over 6.1 innings of work. Enny Pacheco (8-5) took the loss after giving up eight runs on 14 hits in a 4.2 inning outing. Todd Erdos picked up his league-leading 31st save of the season after yielding two runs in his one inning of relief.

The Ducks' 20-hit attack was led by Manny Martinez, who finished the night with five hits. Jason Johnson returned to the lineup after missing five games due to injury and finished 4-for-5 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Rodriguez also finished the night with four hits, two of which were home runs. The former Expo is now one home run from tying the Ducks' all-time home run record set by Kimera Bartee last season (27).

The Ducks and Barnstormers will play game two of their three-game set on Wednesday evening at 7:05 p.m. Lou Brogno and Chris King will call all of the action live from Central Islip on Cablevision channel 18 starting at 7:00 p.m. Southpaw Matt Beech will take the hill for the Flock and will be met by Lancaster's Joe Dawley. Coldwell Banker will provide replica stadiums to the first 1,500 fans in attendance, and will sponsor the Great Home Giveaway taking place after the game. Citibank will cap the evening with a fireworks extravaganza by Grucci. Tickets for this and all Ducks home games remain available by calling 1-888-332-5600, by visiting the Citibank Park box office or by logging onto www.liducks.com and clicking on the tickets icon.

Duck Tales...25 years ago today, a 21-year old Dave LaPoint defeated the Seattle Mariners for his first major league victory. The Ducks pitching coach was with the Milwaukee Brewers at the time and held the Mariners to three runs (two earned) on three hits, while striking out three in 6.2 innings. If you needed further proof why Henry Rodriguez was a contestant in the Home Run Derby at the 1996 MLB All-Star Game: H-Rod had two home runs tonight to bring his total for the season to 26, one shy of the Ducks single season record. Rodriguez has also homered in four straight games and in six of his last seven with seven jacks in that span... Steve Torrealba hit the second triple of his career Tuesday night, the first coming on August 5, 2003 while the Ducks backstop was with Memphis of the Pacific Coast League. The hit also extended Torrealba's home hitting streak to 13 games... Today's crowd of 5,665 raises the total to 2,622,431 fans who have enjoyed baseball at Citibank Park since April of 2000.

The Long Island Ducks, 2004 Atlantic League champions, play their home games at Citibank Park and are in their sixth season of play in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. They have filled their ballpark to over 100 percent capacity in each of their first five seasons and are one of the most successful minor league franchises in the country.
