Galaxy selected to host U.S. Open Cup Final

CARSON, CA (Wednesday, September 07, 2005) - The Home Depot Center, Pizza Hut Park and Soldier Field are the three venues in the running to host the 2005 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final on Sept. 28, pending the results of the semifinal matches on Sept. 14. The Los Angeles Galaxy (MLS) are the only team that controls their own hosting destiny.

With a semifinal win against the Minnesota Thunder (USL1) on Sept. 14, the Galaxy will play host at The Home Depot Center on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills in Carson, Calif., on Sept. 28 to the winner of the other semifinal between the Chicago Fire (MLS) and FC Dallas (MLS).

"We are looking forward to our semifinal match against Minnesota in front of our home fans," said Galaxy President and General Manager Doug Hamilton. "Hopefully, we will have the opportunity to host the U.S. Open Cup Championship at The Home Depot Center as well."

The game, which kicks off at 8 pm will pit the Galaxy, 2-1 winners over the San Jose Earthquakes in the quarterfinals, against the Minnesota Thunder (USL- First Division), who defeated the Kansas City Wizards (MLS), for the right to play for the title in this country's longest-running club championship, which was first played in 1914.

Tickets to the match will be available in the following seating categories, all of which feature deep discounts when compared to the same seats for Galaxy MLS regular season matches: Sidelines ($25), Corners ($15) and Endlines ($10). Galaxy fans wishing to purchase tickets to the match will be able to so through TicketMaster, either over the phone or on the Internet at www.ticketmaster.com. Group tickets, for parties of 10 or more and featuring a savings of five dollars per ticket on sidelines and corners, are available by calling the Galaxy Ticket office directly at 1-877-3GALAXY.

The Galaxy-Thunder battle will be a re-match of the Thunder's surprising 1-0 victory in the quarterfinals of the 2004 U.S. Open Cup, in a game played on July 20 at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis. In that match, defender Chris Brunt scored in the 21st minute and the hosts held on for the victory, sending the Galaxy to their earliest ever exit in the tournament since they began playing in it during the 1999 season.

The Los Angeles Galaxy continue their current homestand with an MLS Western Conference match against the Colorado Rapids this Saturday, September 10 at The Home Depot Center. The club will be giving away Decade of Stars soccer balls to the first 10,000 children 16 & under attending the match whose parents purchase either group tickets or a family four-pack in advance.
