Bobby Bonilla Inducted into Potomac Baseball Hall of Fame

Former Alexandria Dukes and Prince William Pirates infielder Bobby Bonilla was inducted into the Potomac Baseball Hall of Fame on Saturday September 3, 2005. Team owner and first base coach Art Silber presented the plaque to the fans prior to the game against the Winston-Salem Warthogs. The plaque will soon be on permanent display at Pftizner Stadium.

Bonilla played with the Dukes in 1983 and with the Pirates in 1985. He made his major league debut on April 9, 1986 with the Chicago White Sox. Bonilla was a six-time all-star with the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets and a three-time Silver Slugger award winner during his16-year, eight-team Major League career.

In 1983, the switch-hitting Bonilla hit 19 doubles and 11 homers and stole a team-leading 28 bases while with the Dukes. In 1988 he led National League third basemen in games (159) and assists (336). In 1990 Bonilla had five hits in one game with the Pirates. In 1991 he hit an NL leading 44 doubles, also with Pittsburgh. In 1992 Bonilla drove in six runs in one game with the Mets. In 1995 he had a 20-game hitting streak with New York and in 1997 Bonilla played third base for the World Champion Florida Marlins.

Overall, Bonilla posted a career .279 batting average with 1,173 RBI, 408 doubles, 287 home runs, and 61 triples. His final season as a Major League player was with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2001.
