AUGUST 8, 2005, 7:05 p.m.: OMAHA ROYALS (54-61) vs. Tucson (58-57)

HOME: 22-29 (39-33 in ‘04) AWAY: 32-32 (32-40 in '04) vs. Tucson: 0-0 (4-0 in '04)

TONIGHT: The Royals continue a 12-game home stand at Rosenblatt Stadium with the first of a four-game series vs. the Tucson Sidewinders. Air-time is 6:45 p.m. on Magic 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.

SUNDAY: The Royals used three consecutive singles with one out in the bottom of the 9th, with Chris Truby's broken-bat RBI single plating the winning run in a 7-6 victory over Las Vegas. Omaha took the series 3-1. The 51s had completed a comeback from a 6-2 hole they faced after two innings when Henri Stanley line a two-run single off Shawn Sonnier with two outs in the top of the 7th. Jaime Cerda (3-1) got the win, firing 2.0 hitless inning of shutout relief. Matt Diaz and Scott Walter had three hits apiece and both belted two-run homers.

ROYALS REPORT: Sonnier, who had two blown saves in his last three appearances, was released by KC today. The Royals signed 29-year old right-hander Dave Elder, who had been pitching for the Somerset Patriots in the independent Atlantic League. Elder was 4-1 with a 1.47 ERA and six saves for Somerset. In 43.0 innings, he allowed only 24 hits and 19 walks, while chalking up 61 strikeouts and not giving up a home run. Elder was named to the 2005 Atlantic League South Division All-Star team and helped the Patriots win their division's first half championship. The Georgia Tech product pitched in parts of the 2002 and 2003 seasons in the big leagues with Cleveland. *** Cerda's three wins have come in his last four outings. In his last five games, Cerda has a 1.17 ERA (1 ER in 7.2 IP). *** Diaz has hit in 14 of his last 15 games, at an amazing .554 clip (36-65, 4 HR, 17 RBI). In 19 starts since coming down from KC, the Royals left fielder is hitting .488 (40-82). *** Walter has hit in all four games he has played in this month, going 7-for-16 (.438) with a home run and three RBI. *** In the four games vs. Vegas, Adrian Brown went 9-for-16 (.563) with two homers, five RBI and four runs scored. He was coming off a series at Tacoma where he was 0-for-18. *** Calvin Pickering is hitting at a .327 clip (33-101) over his last 27 tilts, with seven home runs and 29 RBI. *** The Royals are hitting .307 as a team over their last eleven games, winning nine of those contests and out-scoring their foes 74-54. *** Over the last two games, Luis Ugueto has gone 4-for-7 with a double, triple, three runs scored and two stolen bases. Prior to those games, he was in a 3-for-45 (.067) slump. *** In his last nine contests, Aaron Guiel is 7-for-39 (.179), although he has managed to score nine runs. *** After starting out 3-for-21 (.143) following his promotion from Wichita, Justin Huber has four hits in his last 12 at-bats.

STARTERS: RH Russ Ortiz (0-0, 0.00) vs. RH Kyle Snyder (1-2, 2.45) Snyder makes his 7th start (10th appearance) for Omaha. The 27-year old righty was just sent down by KC after going 0-3 with a 14.59 ERA in three starts (vs. Toronto, at Tampa Bay and at Boston). Snyder's last start for Omaha was on July 18 vs. Round Rock, when he combined with Sonnier on a three-hitter in a 5-0 win (6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K). Snyder began the season in Omaha's bullpen, making three relief appearances, having no record and a 1.17 ERA. In six relief appearances for KC in April and May, he was 0-0 with a 4.15 ERA. Snyder went on the DL in early May with a strained shoulder. He began a rehab assignment with Omaha on June 16 as a starter. In six starts for the O-Royals, he's 1-2 with a 2.84 ERA (25.1 IP, 21 H, 8 ER, 5 BB, 19 K, 1 HR). He also made one rehab start for Wichita on July 11, getting the win in a 5-4 victory vs. Midland. Snyder missed all of the 2004 season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. KC selected Snyder in the 1st round (7th overall) of the 1999 draft out of the University of North Carolina.
