Cards down Muckdogs

New Jersey Cardinals News Release

The New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) defeated the Batavia Muckdogs (Philadelphia Phillies) 11-10 tonight at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey to take the first game of a three game set. The Cardinals withstood a furious late-inning rally by Batavia to improve to 24-22, while the loss dropped the Muckdogs to 17-27. Cards starter Nick Webber allowed just 2 hits over 7 innings to earn his 5th victory of the season and Sean Danielson had 3 hits and an RBI as the Cardinals banged out 18 hits and moved to a season best 2 games over .500. Batavia designated hitter Welinson Baez finished 2-4 with two home runs and 5 RBI, while starter Scott Mitchinson fell to 1-6 with the loss.

The Cardinals erupted for 8 runs in the bottom of the first, with 7 straight hits to start the inning. Danielson, who extended his hitting streak to a career-best 9, led off with a triple into the right field gap and scored one batter later on Daniel Nelsons single to second base. Shortstop Tyler Greene followed with a single up the middle, before Adam Rodgers ripped a 2-run double to left field. Catcher Brandon Yarbrough, who finished 2-4, singled to move Rodgers to third and Randy Roth made it 4-0 with a single to left. Yonathan Sivira singled to load the bases, and Chad Gabriel followed with the seventh straight Cardinal hit, a 2-run ground-rule double to left field. One out later, Danielson chased Mitchinson with his second hit of the inning, an RBI single, but reliever Kevin Shepard got the last two outs when Nelson bounced into a double play.

After the Cardinals tacked on 3 more runs for an 11-0 lead, Batavia rallied for 10 unanswered runs in the last three innings, but Scott Vander Weg struck out Mark Edwards with the tying run on third base to earn his 1st save of the season.

Webber (5-2), the Cardinals leader in victories, dominated the Muckdogslineup in his seven innings of work. Following P.J. Antoniatos one-out double in the third, Webber retired 13 straight Batavia hitters before surrendering a solo home run to Baez with two outs in the seventh.

Sundays game also marked the 4th start in which Webber allowed two hits or less and the return of pitcher Justin Brown. Brown, who allowed 4 runs on 3 hits and did not record an out, was on the DL since June 23 with a strained oblique muscle.

The teams will return to the field on Monday, August 8 with the middle game of the three game series. Game time is scheduled for 7:15. Mitchell Boggs (3-3, 5.54) looks for his 4th straight win for the Cardinals, while Batavia is set to counter with Matt Maloney (2-1, 3.66). Mondays game features a Rally-Cow Bobble Head giveaway for the first 1,000 fans, courtesy of Coca-Cola and the New Jersey Herald. Kids also eat free Monday night, with a voucher from the New Jersey Herald.
