Braves snap 3-game skid

The Braves downed the Smokies in dramatic fashion, 4-3, in front of 5,148 fans at Trustmark Park on Friday night.

BRAVES 2, SMOKIES 0 The Braves took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Michael Rosamond led off with a single. After Carlos Duran walked, Miguel Bernard ripped a triple down the left field line that brought Rosamond and Duran to the plate giving Mississippi a 2-0 lead.

BRAVES 2, SMOKIES 2 The Smokies came back to tie the score in the sixth when Adam Haley led off the inning with a double. It looked as though the Braves would get out of the inning with no damage done as Sean White struck out the next two batters looking. Chris Carter had other ideas as he hit a blast to right to tie the score at two.

BRAVES 3, SMOKIES 2 Mississippi jumped back out in front in the bottom of the sixth when Onil Joseph reached on an error by third baseman Jamie D'Antona. With two outs in the inning, Luis Hernandez singled through the hole at second base bringing in Joseph to put the Braves back on top.

BRAVES 3, SMOKIES 3 Tennessee tied the score in the eighth when, with two outs, Miguel Montero walked, and Chris Carter doubled to left-center bringing Montero all the way around from first to tie the score.

BRAVES 4, SMOKIES 3 After Tennessee tied the score in the eighth they brought in Casey Daigle to keep the score tied and force extra innings. The Braves had other ideas as Luis Hernandez led off the bottom of the ninth with a triple and Gregor Blanco followed him with a single up the middle that brought in Hernandez with the game winning run.

Braves' starter Sean White (6.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 1 HR) was outstanding again but failed to factor into the decision. Casey DeHart (0.1 IP) came on to close out the seventh and kept the game 3-2 Mississippi. Joey Devine (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) lost the lead in the eighth. Dan Curtis (1.0 IP, 1 H) improves to 1-1 on the year.

For Tennessee, starter Adam Bass (6.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) pitched well, but failed to factor into the decision. Justin Wechsler (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB) came on and shut down the Braves in the seventh. Doug Slaten (0.2 IP, 2 K) struck out the only two batters he faced in the eighth. Mike Schultz (0.1 IP) induced a groundout from the only batter he faced in the eighth. Casey Daigle (0.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER) came on in the ninth and gave up a triple to Luis Hernandez and a single to Gregor Blanco to surrender the fourth run for the Braves and fall to 6-1 on the year.

The Braves and the Smokies will face off again tomorrow night in game two of this three-game series at 7:05 at Trustmark Park. Mississippi will send lefty Chuck James (7-1, 2.44) to the hill while Tennessee will counter with Clint Goocher (7-6, 5.45).
