New Jersey Cardinals News Release

The Lowell Spinners (Boston Red Sox) defeated the New Jersey Cardinals (St Louis Cardinals) 5-1 tonight at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey to win the final game of a three game set. The loss dropped the Cardinals to 17-19, while Lowell improved to 19-16 on the season. Lowell starter Ryan Phillips (4-0) threw six shutout innings to record remain perfect on the season and designated hitter Derek Ramos drove in 2 runs to help the Spinners take two of three in the only series between the teams. Cardinals starter Zack Zuercher fell to 2-4 with the loss despite tying a Cardinalsseason high with 8 strikeouts.

The game was scoreless until the seventh, when Lowell jumped ahead with 3 runs on 4 hits. Rightfielder Luis Soto led off with a single to center and moved to second on Jason Twomleys sacrifice bunt. Left fielder Yahmed Yema followed with an infield single to short to advance Soto to third. Cardinals manager Mark DeJohn brought on reliever Michael Repole to face second baseman Zak Farkes, and the righthander induced a groundball to Daniel Nelson, who was part of a drawn in infield at third. Nelson threw home in an attempt to get Soto, but Soto was able to work himself out of a run down and return safely to the bag at third. After Michael Wagner lifted a sacrifice fly to center, Ramos delivered a two-out, two-run single to right field to give the Spinners a 3-0 lead.

The Cardinals quickly answered back in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to two. Matt Wilkerson led off with a single and Chad Gabriel laced a double to the wall in center that scored Wilkerson from first.

Lowell tacked on an insurance run in the 8th on Yemas RBI groundout and added their final run in the ninth when Twomley drove home Willy Mota with a single.

The Cardinals finish their home stand this weekend with three games against the Aberdeen Ironbirds (Baltimore Orioles). Game one is scheduled for 7:15, Thursday, July 28. The last game of the series on Saturday will also play host to the final night of the Franklin Sussex Auto Mall and WSUS Field of Dreamschallenge, in which one lucky fan will win and drive home from the stadium in a brand new Chrysler PT cruiser convertible.
