Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, NJ, July 20-The Newark Bears announced today that the club has sold the contract of former major league left-hander Bobby M. Jones to the Chicago White Sox organization. Jones will report to Chicago's triple-A affiliate in Charlotte, NC today.

The 33 year-old Jones, who signed with the Bears on June 26th, appeared in 5 games, making 3 starts, for Newark this season as he worked his way back from shoulder surgery. He did not have either a win or a loss, but he struck out 15 batters in 16 innings of work.

"We are very happy for Bobby," said Bears Senior Vice President and General Manager Dean Rivera. "And we are proud to have played a role in Bobby's march back to the major leagues."

Jones, who broke into the big leagues with the Colorado Rockies in 1997, has appeared in 99 major league games in his career. He has also pitched for the New York Mets, San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox, amassing a 14-21 record and a 5.77 ERA at the big league level.

The Bears have had two players signed off of their roster this season by affiliated teams: Jones and right-handed pitcher Greg Bauer, who was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies on May 23rd. Last season four Bears players were signed by affiliated teams, including catcher Julio Mosquera, who this season was called up to the major leagues by the Milwaukee Brewers.

"The Bears take great pride in not only acquiring top-level talent, but in helping these players advance to higher levels, as well," said Rivera. "Having played a role in returning Jose Lima, Rickey Henderson and Julio Mosquera back to the majors over the past few seasons is a source of great pride to everyone in our organization."

The Bears are currently in the midst of a four-game series in Camden against the Riversharks. Newark will return home to open a six-game homestand this Friday, July the 22nd, with a 7:05 PM contest against the Somerset Patriots. Bears tickets may be purchased online at www.NewarkBears.com or by calling (973) 848-1000.
