All-Star game announcements

July 17, 2005 - Northern League (NL) News Release


Harry Berrios of the Winnipeg Goldeyes and Billy Munoz of the St. Paul Saints have been added to the lineup for the 2005 All-Star Home Run Derby, which takes place prior to the All-Star Game this coming Tuesday, July 19 at U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Indiana, it was announced today.

The Home Run Derby, which is being sponsored by Great Lakes Orthopedics, will begin at 5:30 p.m. The U.S. Steel Yard Gates open at 5:00 p.m. The All-Star Game, which is being hosted by the Gary SouthShore RailCats and is presented by U.S. Steel Gary Works, starts at 7:30 p.m.

All reserved and box seats have been sold for the All-Star Game. Standing Room Tickets remain and can be purchased by calling the RailCats at 219-882-BALL (2255)

Berrios has seven homers in 2005 and 99 in his Northern League career, two shy of the all-time record held by Sean Hearn. He joins Fargo-Moorhead's Clyde Williams (16) Carlos Duncan (12) and Greg Morrison (11) both of Calgary, and Sioux Falls slugger Juan Thomas (7) as the North Division Derby participants.

Munoz is among the league leaders with 14 homers this season. The South Division lineup also consists of Joliet's Jayson Drobiak (15), Lincoln's Bryan Warner (15), Lincoln's Cory Harris (14), and Jason Colson of the hometown Gary SouthShore RailCats (8).

The Home Run Derby will consist of two rounds with players receiving six outs in Round One. The players with the top two home run totals from each Division will advance to the Final Round, where each contestant receives nine outs.

The 2004 All-Star Home Run Derby champion was Sioux Falls' Felix Pagan, who defeated Kansas City's Eddie Pearson in the finals.

KIRK PIERCE ADDED TO NORTH DIVISION ALL-STARS The Northern League announced today that catcher Kirk Pierce of the Sioux Falls Canaries has been added to the North Division All-Star roster. He replaces catcher Marcel Longmire of the Sioux City Explorers, who will miss the All-Star Game with a pulled calf muscle. Pierce is batting .239 with three homers and 14 rbi in 32 games with the Canaries this season. Longmore's place in the starting lineup will be taken by Adam Shorsher of Calgary.

BRANDON CULP NAMED NORTH DIVISION STARTER Righthander Brandon Culp of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks has been named by manager Mike Busch as the North Division starting pitcher for Tuesday's All-Star game. Culp is 8-0, 2.86 with the RedHawks this season. He will be opposed by righthamder Matt Bailie (6-0. 1.73) of the Schaumburg Flyers

PEDRO SANTANA TURNS UNASSISTED TRIPLE PLAY Second baseman Pedro Santana of the Calgary Vipers turned an unassisted play on Saturday night against the Gary SouthShore Railcats at Foothills Stadium. With Anthony Iapoce at 2nd and Scott Samuels at 1st in the top of the first inning, Ben Risinger lined a 3-1 pitch to Santana. With the runners going, the Calgary second baseman stepped on second to double up Iapoce and tagged Samuels for the third out.

It was the second unassisted triple play in Northern League history. Shortstop Allen Williams of Duluth-Superior had one in 1994. It was the league's first triple play since Schaumburg turned one in 2002.
