Papelbon Promoted to Triple-A, Sanchez Joins Sea Dogs

Portland, Maine- The Boston Red Sox have announced that right-handed pitcher Jon Papelbon has been promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket. Boston's # 5 prospect, according to Baseball America, Anibal Sanchez has been promoted to the Sea Dogs from Single-A Wilmington to fill Papelbon's roster spot.
Papelbon, a 24-year old from Jacksonville, Florida was selected to represent the Sea Dogs in the 2005 Hannaford Eastern League All-Star Game. In 14 games with the Sea Dogs in 2005, Papelbon is 5-2 with a 2.48 ERA (2nd in the Eastern League). In his final outing with the Sea Dogs on Saturday night, he pitched six hitless innings against the Norwich Navigators, striking out ten and walking one.
Papelbon was selected by the Red Sox in the fourth round of the 2003 draft. Papelbon enters the 2005 season rated as the #3 prospect in the Red Sox organization and the #91 prospect in all of minor league baseball by Baseball America. He is also rated by Baseball America as possessing the best fastball and slider in the Red Sox minor league system. He was named the Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Year for Single-A Sarasota in 2004
Anibal Sanchez, a 21 year-old right-handed pitcher from Maracay, Venezuela has appeared in 13 games for the Single-A Wilmington Blue Rocks in 2005. He has posted an 8-1 record with a Carolina League leading 2.40 ERA and is third in the league with 89 strikeouts. Sanchez has yet to yield an earned run in a road game this season, posting a perfect 4-0 record in five starts.
Sanchez was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Red Sox on January 3, 2001. Sanchez will join Sea Dogs Manager Todd Claus and shortstop Hanley Ramirez at the 2005 Major League Baseball Future's Game to be held in Detroit on July 10th. Sanchez was also selected as a Carolina League All-Star.
Papelbon is the third top prospect to be promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket this season. Closer Cla Meredith was promoted May 4th and second baseman Dustin Pedroia got the call on June 22nd.
The Sea Dogs begin an eight-game road trip on Monday that will take them to Trenton, New Jersey for four games with the Thunder and to Manchester, New Hampshire for four games with the Fisher Cats taking the Dogs up to the All-Star break. The Portland Sea Dogs will host the 2005 Hannaford Eastern League All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 13th at 7:00 PM.
