Cards win season opener

New Jersey Cardinals News Release


This evening at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey, the Cardinals won their season opener 4-3 against the Williamsport Crosscutters (Pittsburgh Pirates) in front of a sold out crowd (5,319). Matthew Trent (1-0) was the winning pitcher for New Jersey, while Derrik Moeves (0-1) took the loss for Williamsport.

The Cardinals started their rally in the bottom of the ninth with a one out single by Casey Rowlett. Rowlett moved to second when Daniel Nelson was hit by a pitch and one batter later scored as Adam Rogers singled in the winning run with a hit in his first professional at bat.

The Cardinals jumped on top in the 2nd inning with Brandon Yarbrough scoring the first run of the season on a Nelson sacrifice fly. Williamsport tied the game in the top of the 7th on an RBI groundout. Brandon Yarbrough was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the 7th and later scored on a Chad Gabriel double. With one out, Daniel Nelson drove home Gabriel with an RBI single to right to put the Cardinals up 3-1. Williamsport rallied in the top of the 8th scoring twice to tie it at 3-3

The Cardinals and Crosscutters resume there three game series on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. at Skylands Park. The first 1000 fans will receive a magnetic schedule courtesy of Miller Lite and their will also be a player bat raffle after the game.
