Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA - The Burlington Bees (19-22) rallied from down 6-1 to pull within one, but never caught up as the Swing of the Quad Cities (24-17) went on to win 9-6 at Community Field tonight. The Swing now lead the series 2-1 with just one game left to play.

The Bees got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the third inning. Kenard Springer led off with a double and scored on a groundout by Irving Falu. The Swing came back with four runs in the top of the fourth against starter Danny Christensen (0-2). With one out, Matt Shepherd singled to extend his hitting streak to eleven games and scored on Chris Patrick's two-run homer. After a walk, Derry Hammond tripled to right-center to drive in another run and then scored on a passed ball to make it 4-1. Christensen came out after the fourth and Patrick Hicklen took over in the top of the fifth. The Swing tacked on two more after an error by Eddie Solis at third prolonged the inning. The unearned runs made it 6-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ed Lucas, Solis, Springer, and Derek Norman each singled to drive to produce one run and load the bases with nobody out against Swing starter Dennis Dove. Falu then ripped a line drive that was snared by Joe Mather at first for the first out, but Geraldo Valentin followed with a triple over the head of Simon Williams in center to clear the bases and pull the Bees to within one at 6-5. Dove came out of the game in favor of Jason Knoff who got a strikeout and a popout to end the inning and strand Valentin at third.

In the top of the seventh, the Swing added two more runs on a two-run single by Patrick who drove in four in the game. One of the runs was unearned as Hicklen committed an error while fielding a bunt by Matt Lemanczyk. The Bees got one back in the bottom of the seventh on a solo homer by Rusty Brown, his second of the year.

Rusty Begnaud pitched the top of the ninth for the Bees and Jarrett Hoffpauir hit his first pitch out of the ballpark for a solo homer to make it 9-6. That was more than enough for side-arming closer Mike Sillman who set the Bees down in order in the bottom of the ninth for his second save of the series and his eleventh of the season.

The Bees and Swing wrap up this series tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 at Community Field. LH Matt Campbell (0-5, 4.71) will pitch for the Bees against RH Quinton Robertson (0-0, 4.50) for the Swing. Tomorrow is Community Basket Day at Community Field when the winning ticket for Iowa's Largest Community Basket will be drawn after the seventh inning. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 1:40.
