Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington IA (May 19, 2005) - Luis Cota allowed just one hit over seven shutout innings, but the Swing of the Quad Cities (23-16) rallied for two runs in the top of the eighth to beat the Burlington Bees (18-21) 2-1 at Community Field tonight. The Swing has now won seven straight games. Cota hasn't allowed a run in 22 innings over his last four starts and dropped his ERA to 1.60.

Swing starter Eric Haberer also pitched well. He allowed just one run on three hits and struck out seven in six innings. The Bees got on the board in the bottom of the third inning on a two-out single by Ed Lucas that brought in Miguel Vega from second base. The Bees only other treat to score came in the bottom of the seventh against Michael Gross. With two outs, Gross grazed Eddie Solis with a 3-2 pitch and Vega blooped a single to right to put runners on the corners, but Gross (1-3) struck out Robert Grana to end the inning. After a walk to Lucas with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, Gross gave way to closer Mike Sillman. Sillman got out of the inning as Lucas was caught stealing and Geraldo Valentin flied out to right. He struck out the side in order in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn his tenth save.

The only hit against Cota was an infield single by Jake Mullinax in the fifth inning. Cota walked three and struck out five to move into third place in the Midwest League with 52 strikeouts on the year. Adam Rowe took over in the top of the eighth and gave up a leadoff double to Mullinax off the glove of a lunging Vega at first. An errant pickoff attempt moved Mullinax to third and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Ferris to tie the game. Wes Slackhamer followed with a single, but was forced out at second as Matt Lemanczyk reached on a fielder's choice. Rowe then gave way to Yovany Damico who was called for a balk before he threw a pitch to move Lemanczyk to second. That was a critical play as Matt Shepherd looped a single to right-center that drove in Lemanczyk with the go-ahead run. Rowe (3-1) was charged with a blown save and a loss. Damico struck out Joe Mather to end the eighth. Chad Blackwell finished the ninth for the Bees.

These two teams continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Patrick Green (1-2, 4.00) will start for the Bees against RH Matt Scherer (1-1, 4.56) for the Swing. The gates will open at 6:00 for a TGI Bud Night featuring 2-for-$3 specials on all cans of Budweiser products throughout the game. The game will also be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
