Nashville Sounds News Release
DES MOINES – The Iowa Cubs took advantage of three Nashville errors to score seven unearned runs in posting an 8-2 victory over the Sounds on Thursday evening in the finale of a four-game series at Principal Park.
With the loss, the Cubs gained a split of the four-game series and Nashville (16-12) fell back into a first place tie with Memphis in the PCL American Conference Northern Division.
Catcher Mark Johnson, who attended spring training with the Brewers before being traded to the Cubs near the end of March, paced the Iowa offense with a 3-for-4, four-RBI effort that included a pair of doubles. Shortstop Shane Halter and third baseman Mike Fontenot also added three-hit effort for the victorious Cubs.
Centerfielder Ryan Knox led the Sounds with a 2-for-4 effort that included a double.
Both offenses got going early as each team plated runs in the first inning. After the Sounds took a 2-0 lead on a Brad Nelson RBI double – the outfielder’s team-leading 11th two-bagger of the season – and a Corey Hart sacrifice fly, the homestanding Cubs took a 3-2 lead with a three-run first against Nashville starter Ben Hendrickson.
Things unraveled quickly for the Sounds right-hander as Iowa poured on five more runs against Hendrickson in the second to up the lead to 8-2.
Hendrickson (1-3) lasted only two innings for the Sounds, but only one of the eight runs he allowed over that stretch was earned due to three Nashville errors.
Jeff Housman, who was scheduled to start Friday eveningÂ’s series opener in Omaha, was summoned to work in relief by Nashville manager Frank Kremblas and offered five scoreless innings to spell a tired bullpen.
Prince Fielder ripped an opposite-field single to left in the third to extend his hitting streak to a season-best six games. Rickie Weeks had his season-best six-game hit streak snapped with an 0-for-3 evening.
Iowa starter Sergio Mitre (2-3) picked up the victory after allowing two runs on six hits over six innings of work.
The Sounds continue their road trip by moving on to Omaha, Nebraska, where theyÂ’ll open a four-game series with the division-rival Royals on Friday evening. Right-hander Rick Helling (1-0, 6.00) will start the 7:05 p.m. series opener for the Sounds and face Omaha right-hander Danny Tamayo (1-2, 4.32).
