5th Annual "Baseball Math" Challenge
May 5, 2005 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
For the 5th consecutive year, a sponsorship by Agilent Technologies has helped subsidize ticket prices, enabling schools to utilize Sky Sox games as an affordable and educational field trip. Advanced reserve tickets have been reduced 50% (from $7.00 to $3.50) for area schools to attend special 10:35 a.m. Sky Sox games at Security Service Field on May 11 & 12, 2005. Resulting in over 8,000 area students experiencing a professional baseball game from a new perspective...as a math lesson.
Annually, four weekday games are moved to 10:35 a.m. to serve the demand of Agilent's popular "Baseball Math Day" Field Trips. The first two games, earlier this season on April 13 & 14 attracted over 5,000 student participants.
UCCS Math Professor Gene Abrams prepares "Baseball Math" questions that are presented both pre-game and in-game. Pre-game questions are directed to students on the field, representing ten area elementary and middle schools, as they compete for "Math Mound Master" honors. The winner receives prizes from the UCCS gift shop, Sky Sox tickets, and the honor of tossing out the ceremonial first pitch of that days ball game.
"This is an exciting opportunity for students to experience a positive, community-based activity, and to apply mathematical concepts and skills in the relevant and real-world context of America's National Pastime," offered Kelly Parthen, Public Affairs Manager at Agilent Technologies in Colorado Springs.
Between innings students are challenged by Professor Abrams with Baseball Math questions, referring to a sheet that includes current Sky Sox team statistics.
Since 2001, over 50,000 students from 120 area elementary and middle schools have participated in Agilent Technologies "Baseball Math" field trips.
