Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Josh Barfield's three-run double in the bottom of the eighth gave the Portland Beavers their third lead of the game and a 9-8 victory over the Salt Lake Stingers at PGE Park Wednesday night.

The Beavers (12-13) blew leads of 2-0 and 6-5 but loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth to set up Barfield's bases-clearing double to deep left that overcame a two-run deficit. Barfield finished with four RBIs, and Bobby Scales contributed with a bases-loaded double in the fifth.

Casey Kotchman had four hits and Jeff Mathis clubbed a pair of solo home runs for the Stingers (16-9), who threatened in the ninth before Brad Baker shut the door for his seventh save.

Brian Falkenborg improved to 3-0 and struck out three in relief for Portland. Joel Peralta (3-1) took the loss.

In the top of the seventh, Mathis' second home run - a solo shot off the top level of the manual scoreboard in left-center - tied the game and Nick Gorneault's two-run blast gave the Stingers an 8-6 lead.

The Beavers had a 2-0 advantage in the first and overcame a three-run deficit in the fifth thanks to a four-run outburst highlighted by Scales' bases-loaded double.

In the first, the Beavers broke an 18-inning scoring drought on a sac fly by Barfield and an RBI single from Ben Risinger, who was hit by a pitch three times in the game.

Salt Lake plated single runs in the third and fourth to tie the game and went in front 5-2 with a three-run fifth. Kotchman, who was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, greeted reliever Brandon Emanuel with a towering solo shot to right field. Two batters later, Mathis easily cleared the wall in left with no one on, and Ryan Budde singled home Brian Gordon.

The Beavers conclude their series with the Stingers with a special Cinco de Mayo party at PGE Park on Thursday night. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.

NOTES: The San Diego Padres recalled left-handed pitcher Randy Williams on Wednesday ... the Beavers placed right-hander Danny Patterson on the disabled list with a torn rotator cuff ... Kerry Robinson extended his hitting streak to 11 games ... Knott was hit by a pitch twice and there were a total of six hit batsmen in the contest ... seventeen of the 18 starters had a least one hit, with only Casey Smith going hitless ... Portland manager Craig Colbert was ejected in the seventh ... Salt Lake left 11 men on base, while Portland stranded 10 ... the four home runs allowed is a new season high for the Beavers.
