NEWARK, NJ, May 4—The Newark Bears rallied from a 9-1 deficit, but still dropped a 9-7 decision to the Somerset Patriots Wednesday afternoon at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

For the second straight game the Bears had the tying and winning runs on base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but fell short as Somerset reliever Shane Heams recorded the final out on both occasions. On Wednesday NewarkÂ’s Jeremy Todd lined out to shortstop for the final out of the game as Heams recorded his second save of the season.

Trailing 9-1, the Bears scored four times in the 7th inning and one each in the 8th and 9th innings. Jerson Perez, who was 3-5 with a double and 3 RBI on the afternoon, delivered a two-run double in the 7th inning; Todd crushed a solo home run in the 8th inning; and catcher Abraham Ayala blasted a lead off home run in the 9th inning. Ayala went 4-4 at the plate for Newark on Wednesday, hitting his first home run and driving in two runs.

SomersetÂ’s Jeremy Owens had a big day, going 3-5 with a double, his 2nd home run of the season, 2 stolen bases, 3 runs scored and 2 RBI. Teammate Tony Gsell added 2 doubles, a run scored and an RBI for Somerset.

Former New York Yankees right-hander Brett Jodie (1-1) earned the victory for the Patriots, hurling six innings of one-run, seven-hit ball. He bested NewarkÂ’s Joe Gannon (1-1) who allowed 4 runs (3 earned) and 6 hits in 6 innings of work.

The Bears, who have lost the first two games of this three-game series, will once again host the Patriots Thursday night at 7:05 PM. Greg Bauer (1-0) of Newark will face SomersetÂ’s Scott Sobkowiak (0-0) in the series finale on Thursday.
