Edmonton Elks News Release

(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos announced the signing of offensive lineman Mark Shantz, long-snapper Taylor Inglis, defensive lineman Corey Trudeau and defensive back Martin Gagnon today.

Shantz, a standout at the University of Alberta, was named the Canada West Rookie of the Year in 2000 and also selected to the 2004 Canada West All-Star team. In five seasons and 40 starts, Shantz did not miss a game and anchored an offensive line that returned the Golden Bears to the top of the Canada West standings. Shantz was also a team captain and the squad’s long-snapper the past two years.

Inglis is a local product who played for the Edmonton Wildcats in 2004 after spending some time with the University of Alberta. He made an immediate impact on the PFC squad last season as the starting center and emerged as a special teams leader. Football runs deep in the Inglis household as Taylor’s father Gerry is the offensive line coach at the U of A.

Trudeau originally signed with the Toronto Argonauts as a free agent in January 2004 and was released during training camp. He played five seasons at Queens University (1999-2003). In 1999, he was awarded the Royal Todd Memorial Trophy for Rookie of the Year and the Orrin Carson Memorial Trophy for Lineman of the Year in 2000 and 2002. Trudeau was also a second-team all-star and a team captain in both 2002 and 2003. He racked-up 53 career defensive tackles and 10 sacks for the Golden Gaels. Corey spent the 2004 season coaching at Queens.

Gagnon makes his second trip to Eskimo training camp after originally being drafted by Edmonton in the sixth round (44th overall) in the 2004 Canadian College Draft. Gagnon was released during camp and returned to school at Laval in 2004 where he racked-up 33 tackles in eight games and added two pass knockdowns, one tackle for a loss and two interceptions.
