Hamilton, Ontario - The Hamilton Tiger-Cats Football Club announced today that the team has signed wide receiver Hugh Smith, linebacker Rod Dunlap and defensive end Jeremy Lawrence. Smith agreed to a one year (plus an option) deal while Dunlap and Lawrence inked two year (plus an option) contracts.
Smith, a 25 year-old receiver from Merritt Island, Florida, spent part of last season on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers' practice roster after signing with the team on September 16, 2004. Prior to joining Winnipeg, Smith had stints NFL's Cleveland Browns (2004) and the Baltimore Ravens (2003). Before turning pro, Smith played four seasons at the University of South Florida. After converting from running back to receiver as a sophomore, Smith recorded 131 receptions for 1,523 yards and 10 touchdowns, finishing his career as USF's all-time leading receiver.
Dunlap, a 6'2, 235-pound defensive end, played three seasons at Western Carolina University, recording 275 tackles, nine forced fumbles, five quarterback sacks and three interceptions in 34 games. In 2003, Dunlap earned a second team All-Southern Conference selection for his efforts.
Lawrence, a native of Winnsboro, Louisiana, played four seasons with the Louisiana State University Tigers. During his time at LSU, the 6'3, 240-pound defensive end made 166 tackles, eight quarterback sacks and one interception in 47 career games. Most recently, Lawrence signed with the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings of Arena Football 2 in February of 2005.
