Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (April 28, 2005) - The Burlington Bees (7-12) mustered just one run on three hits as the streaking Clinton LumberKings (16-4) won 5-1 in game one of a four-game series at Community Field last night. The LumberKings have won seven in a row and are 14-2 since splitting a four-game series with the Bees at Alliant Energy Field to open the season.
Bees' starter Patrick Green got off to a great as he retired the first nine men he faced in the game. Meanwhile, the Bees missed some early chances against LumberKings starter Kyle Rogers, leaving six men on base through the first three innings. In the top of the fourth, Green walked Cameron Coughlan to leadoff the inning and Tug Hulett followed with a base hit to right to advance Coughlan to third. Adam Fox then hit a one-hopper right back to the mound and Green instantly turned to throw to second. The Bees got the force out, but no double play and Coughlan scored to make it 1-0. In the top of the fifth, Emerson Frostad led off with a double and scored later in the inning on a single by Coughlan. After a walk to Hulett loaded the bases with two outs, Green (0-1) gave way to Nate Moore. Moore got Fox to hit a hard ground ball that hit off Coughlan running from second to third for the final out of the inning.
The Bees got their only run in the bottom of the fifth on a solo homer by Geraldo Valentin. It was Valentin's first homer of the year and the team's sixth. Rogers (1-0) struck out the next two batters and turned the game over to his bullpen in the sixth.
The LumberKings added an unearned run in the seventh as Alan Moye overran a ball on a base hit into centerfield that allowed Billy Susdorf to score from second. It was the only run against Moore who worked 2.1 innings. Adam Rowe took over in the eighth and set down the LumberKings in order, before allowing his first runs of the season in the ninth. With a runner at first and one out, Susdorf lined a ball over a leaping Brian McFall in right. Rowe then walked Coughlan intentionally to load the bases. Hulett followed with an RBI single and Casey Benjamin drove in a run with a slow groundout to second. Hulett replaced Fox at shortstop in the sixth after Fox fouled a ball off of his left leg in the fifth.
In the bottom of the ninth, Moye led off with an infield single, but Eddie Solis hit into a 6-4-3 double play. After the play, Moye and Hulett got tangled at second and Moye flipped Hulett over his hip trying to get up. Moye was ejected as the benches cleared. No one touched each other and order was restored. Mike Padgett was still on the mound in his fourth inning of relief and was one strike away from a save when he threw a 1-2 pitch behind Darwinson Salazar. He was immediately ejected and Roberto Perez came in to throw one pitch for strike three to Salazar to end the game.
The Bees and LumberKings continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. LH Danny Christensen (0-0, 3.60) will start for the Bees against RH John Bannister (2-0, 2.31) for the LumberKings. The gates open at 6:00 for a TGI Bud Night featuring 2-for-$3 specials on all cans of Budweiser products. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
