Right-handed starting pitcher Travis Smith has had his contract purchased by the Florida Marlins and will join the team in Miami immediately, the Marlins announced today.
In three starts with Albuquerque this season, Smith has two wins and a 6.00 earned run average, allowing 10 earned runs on 14 hits in 15 innings-pitched.
On Opening Day at Isotopes Park on April 7, the Springfield, Oregon native out-dueled Chicago Cubs superstar Mark Prior, yielding one earned run on six hits while striking out a season-high eight batters in a 7-5 Topes win.
This will be Smiths fourth stint in the Major Leagues, having appeared with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1998, St. Louis Cardinals in 2002, and Atlanta Braves in 2004. Last year, he appeared in a career-high 16 games, including four starts, compiling a 2-3 record with 6.20 ERA.
