Goldeyes say hi and good-bye to Hammond in just 48 hours

April 15, 2005 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Winnipeg fans hadnÂ’t even had time to get to know outfielder Derry Hammond before he was on his way back to organized ball.

Manager Hal Lanier announced today that the St. Louis Cardinals had picked up HammondÂ’s contract. After being released earlier this month by the Blue Jays, Hammond signed with Winnipeg on Wednesday, just two days before he was en route to the Cardinals.

A Northeast League all-star last year with Bangor, Hammond, 25, batted a career-high .287 with 23 home runs and 66 runs batted in. His dingers total led the league, as did his 44 extra-base hits and 172 total bases. He also finished second in slugging percentage (.610) and was fourth in RBI.

Looking to fill HammondÂ’s shoes in the outfield, Lanier acquired outfielder Jorge Moreno from New Jersey of the CanAm League for cash and a player to be named later.

No stranger to Winnipeg fans, Moreno played for Lincoln the past two years following five seasons in the Cleveland system.

Individual tickets go on sale April 30 at all Ticketmaster outlets, at ticketmaster.ca or by calling 780-3333
