Widger first Rivershark to make big leagues

April 7, 2005 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Camden Riversharks News Release

Chris Widger has become the first Rivershark to make his way onto a major league roster. A catcher for the Sharks last season, Widger will open the 2005 campaign with the Chicago White Sox. An impressive spring helped earn him a spot on the team as the backup catcher, beating out six-year veteran Ben Davis, for the job.

A Pennsville High graduate, Widger has also played for the Seattle Mariners, Montreal Expos, St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Yankees, batting .242 with 50 homeruns in parts of eight seasons.

At 34, Widger is grateful for his opportunity in Chicago. "It's nice to know that if you put in the work, everything pays off. They gave me all the chances in the world to make this team, and I got all the playing time I could ask for. I couldn't have asked for anything better out of spring training."

John Brandt, the Riversharks General Manager, is happy to see Widger get another shot in the bigs. "We are very proud of Chris for becoming the first Rivershark player to earn a spot with a major league team and we wish him all the best for the upcoming season."

Individual tickets to all 2005 home games, including the home opener vs. the Nashua Pride, on April 28th, are now on sale. Fans can purchase tickets online at www.riversharks.com or contact the Riversharks ticket office at 1-866-Sharks9. Additionally, fans can now purchase tickets for the July 1st Def Leppard/Bryan Adams Rock 'N Roll doubleheader concert.
