Ahmaad Galloway: An eBay Find

An Ahmaad Galloway Denver Bronco rookie card was for sale yesterday on eBay with a Buy-It-Now price of twenty-five cents. It had exactly zero bids with only 3 days left to go in the auction. There was also a similar “Ahmad” Galloway card for sale on eBay with an opening bid of 99 cents. A word to the wise would say knowing how to spell can save you money.

Ahmaad Galloway will be the starting running back in for the Frankfurt Galaxy in NFL Europe this season. The Denver Broncos drafted Galloway despite the major knee injury he suffered his senior season at Alabama. The former Crimson Tide running back played only sparingly last season for the Scottish Claymores in NFL Europe. His knee was not yet back to being 100% and the Claymores closed operations after the 2004 season and were replaced by the Hamburg Sea Devils. This season Galloway will be the feature back for the Galaxy, who look to return to the World Bowl after losing to the Berlin Thunder in the championship game.

Galloway played very well at Alabama and was on pace to be a first-day draft pick in the 2003 draft before the knee injury sidetracked his professional career. He slipped to a second-day draft pick, selected by the Broncos in the seventh round. He was placed on injured reserve before the season started. The Broncos probably only selected him on a flyer or as a favor to a member on their coaching staff, who may have held Galloway in high regard and thought he could have been rehabilitated.

The Galaxy will have to rely on Ahmaad Galloway’s running skills more than they may have originally planned. Quarterback Akili Smith has showed some rust in his game and it has been announced he will split time with quarterback Kevin Eakin to start the season. Continued inconsistency from Smith will mean more carries for Galloway. Unless Smith improves this season, he cannot be anything but a disappointment. Drafted third overall in the NFL Draft in 1999 behind Tim Couch and Donovan McNabb, for Smith to split time in NFL Europe with Eakin is amazing. Going into this summer’s NFL Europe season, Smith was one of the most highly touted players by the league officials because of his name recognition. Galloway may end up redeeming Frankfurt from a losing season.

Galloway was allocated by the San Diego Chargers and a descent NFL Europe season could get him a backup role to LaDainian Tomlinson and Jesse Chatman. Third on the depth chart does not necessarily mean season-long obscurity by any means. Chatman received quite a few carries during the Chargers much-better-than-expected season. The Denver Broncos, who originally drafted Galloway, seem to turn a third or fourth string player into Pro-bowler running back every season.

Galloway, in his online diary, seems to relish his experience in the league, talking favorably about not only his teammates, but also his upcoming opponents. Note to Eric Crouch: This is how you are supposed to act. Galloway has all positive things to say about the city of Frankfurt and its football fans. Never once has he complained like Crouch about street signs in Germany not being in English. Which is really humorous because Galloway’s major while at Alabama: English! Galloway also mentions how he “has been focused” on his team and has been studying game film to make himself better and prepare for the Galaxy’s week one opponent, the Berlin Thunder. The Frankfurt/Berlin match-up will be a rematch of the 2004 World Bowl.

Frankfurt fans can look forward to Galloway carrying the ball for their team this season. Quotes from his diary include “My main goal here is to win the World Bowl” and “I couldn’t ask for a better situation right now.” Galaxy fans take great joy in knowing the team has a good running back that is likeable and someone fans will want to root for.

I got back on eBay and found a Buy-it-now Galloway rookie card for only one penny! The shipping costs were $2 though, which raise my total cost for it to $2.01. Hopefully, Ahmaad will have a good season and the money will be a good investment.
