Patriots sign former San Diego Padres shortstop Kevin Nicholson and Flemington resident Tony Gsell

Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball have announced the signing of former San Diego Padres shortstop Kevin Nicholson and Flemington resident Tony Gsell, a utility player.

Nicholson played at the Major League level for the Padres for 37 games and also has five seasons of Triple-A experience for the Padres, Colorado Rockies, St. Louis Cardinals, and Pittsburgh Pirates organizations. He was the Padres first round draft pick and 27th overall in 1997.

Nicholson spent the 2004 season in Altoona, the Double-A affiliate for the Pirates. In his time with Altoona in 2003, Nicholson hit .294 with 119 hits, 31 doubles, five triples, and 45 RBI in 114 games played.

Nicholson is a career .266 hitter with 682 hits, 172 doubles, 21 triples, and 343 RBI in 714 games played.

“We feel that Kevin will be a solid addition to our infield. His Major League experience will help provide consistency and leadership on the field,” said Patrick McVerry, President and General Manager of the Somerset Patriots Baseball Club.

Gsell was a utility player for the Patriots for the past two seasons. He finished the 2004 season with 22 runs, 48 hits, 11 doubles, five home runs, and 23 RBI in 69 games played. Gsell finished the 2003 season with 44 hits, including 11 home runs in 67 games.

Gsell is a graduate of Immaculata High School where he is a member of the Batter's Helmet Hall of Fame for the school. He was named the Courier News “High School Player of The Year” in 1995, the same year he made the First Team All-State as well as All-Area, All-County and All-Conference teams.
