Manchester, N.H.- John Valentin has resigned from his position as hitting coach of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. Valentin was hired by Toronto as a hitting coach for the Fisher Cats this offseason in his first venture into the coaching world. He previously spent 11 years in the Major Leauges as a player, hitting .279 with 124 HR and 558 RBI in his career with the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets.
Toronto has yet to announce a replacement for Valentin. The Fisher Cats coaching staff for 2005 currently includes Manager Mike Basso, the 2004 Eastern League Manager of the Year, Pitching Coach Dave LaRoche, a former Major League All-Star who joins the Fisher Cats for the first time this year, and Trainer Voon Chong, who returns for a 2nd season with the Fisher Cats.
The Fisher Cats begin defense of their Eastern League Championship on April 7 against the New Britain Rock Cats (Double-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins) as they open up their brand new ballpark in downtown Manchester. For tickets, visit nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
