Kirk Daubenspeck Named MeiGray Group ECHL Alumnus of the Month

PRINCETON, N.J. - Former South Carolina Stingrays and current Portland Pirates goaltender Kirk Daubenspeck is the MeiGray Group ECHL Alumnus of the Month for February.

Daubenspeck was 6-3-1 with two shutouts, a goals-against average of 1.68 and a save percentage of .950 in 10 games with Portland in February, helping the Pirates get back to .500 in the Atlantic Division. Daubenspeck is 8-3-1 with three shutouts, a goals-against average of 1.42 and a save percentage of .957 with Portland and would lead the league in goals-against average and save percentage if he had enough minutes to qualify.

Prior to joining Portland, Daubenspeck was 12-10-3 with two shutouts, a goals-against average of 2.30 and a save percentage of .934 in 25 games with South Carolina of the ECHL. In 2003-04, Daubenspeck appeared in 47 games with South Carolina, going 29-15-4 with a 2.66 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage, and in one game with Worcester of the AHL.

Daubenspeck began his professional career in 1997-98 with Jacksonville of the ECHL where he was 20-9-2 with a goals-against average of 2.96 and a save percentage of .904 as well as playing in 18 games for Indianapolis of the International Hockey League.

Daubenspeck has spent parts of seven of his eight professional seasons in the ECHL with Jacksonville, Chesapeake, and South Carolina. In the 2000-01, Daubenspeck was named ECHL Goaltender of the Month for November and helped South Carolina win its second Kelly Cup Championship, finishing 9-3 in the Kelly Cup Playoffs. In 2002-03, Daubenspeck made 1,802 saves in the regular season, the fourth-highest total in ECHL history.

Selected in the seventh round (151st overall) by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, Daubenspeck played college hockey in his hometown of Madison, Wisconsin at the University of Wisconsin. He was a Western Collegiate Hockey Association second team All-Star and a second team All-America selection in 1997.

The ECHL has affiliations with 24 of the 28 teams in the AHL and 115 players on ECHL rosters the week of February 28 are on AHL contracts. The ECHL has affiliations with 23 of the 30 teams in the National Hockey League and 98 players on ECHL rosters the week of February 28 are on NHL contracts.
