COLUMBUS, Ga., February 15 â SpongeBob SquarePants, the star of Nickelodeon's smash-hit television cartoon series will join the Riverdragons on Saturday, February 19th for a live appearance at the Columbus Civic Center as the Dragons host the Huntsville Flight at 7 p.m.. SpongeBob will be joined by his sidekick, Patrick Star, and both characters will be on hand to meet, greet, and sign autographs for kids and adults of all ages before, during, and after the game. "SpongeBob SquarePants Night with the Riverdragons" is sponsored by Knology, Clear Channnel, McDonald's, and West Georgia Orthodontics.
Launched in 1999 by creator Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants has become the most popular kids show on television, routinely attracting ten million kids viewers (ages two to eleven) per week. The cartoon has also developed a large following among adults, with over five million adult viewers (ages 18 to 49) for each episode on Nickelodeon. The show centers around the title character, SpongeBob SquarePants, a squeaky-voiced sponge who lives inside of a pineapple in the undersea town of Bikini Bottom. An eternal optimist who works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab restaurant, SpongeBob is surrounded by a zany cast of characters which includes his pet snail Gary, starfish and best friend Patrick, and main nemesis Plankton, who constantly tries to steal the Krusty Krab's secret recipe for Krabby Patties.
"We have looked forward to our 'SpongeBob SquarePants' promotion all year....and it is finally here", said Riverdragons Team President J. Barry McMullin. "There is probably not another cartoon character that resonates more with kids of all ages than SpongeBob and we are excited to welcome him back to Columbus by inviting him to appear at one of our home games this season."
In conjunction with the night's events, the Riverdragons will be having a diaper drive, supporting Children's Tree House's TRUST Program. Fans who bring a new pack of disposable diapers to the Civic Center box office prior to the game will receive half off a $14 ticket. Children's Tree House is the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit's Child Advocacy Center. The TRUST Program is a chartered child abuse program under Prevent Child Abuse Georgia working to provide mothers of newborns with comprehensive support services and parental education.
