In conjunction with the graduation announcement it was also announced that Michael Bradley, the son of MetroStars Head Coach Bob Bradley, has signed with Major League Soccer as a member of the 2004 Nike Project-40 class.
Bradley Honored: Bob Bradley will be honored by the New Jersey Sports Writers Association on January 25th, 2004 at its annual banquet at the Pines Manor in Edison, New Jersey. Bradley is the recipient of the "Distinguished Service to Soccer Award" and also will be inducted into the NJ Sports Writers Association's prestigious Hall of Fame.
Bradley was selected to receive these honors because of his dedication to the sport of soccer and his ties to the state of New Jersey. Bradley, a New Jersey native, led his high school alma mater West Essex to a Group III State championship in 1973. He then went on to a successful college career at Princeton University where he led the Tigers in scoring his senior year.
Bradley, as a coach, has had the same amount of success he had as a player. He coached the Princeton Tigers to two Ivy titles, three NCAA tournament bids, and led his squad to the NCAA Final Four for the first and only time in the history of the school. In Major League Soccer, Bradley has become the all-time winningest coach in league history. In 1998, he was named MLS Coach of the Year for his accomplishments with the Chicago Fire. Last year, Bradley came back to New Jersey to coach the MetroStars. In his first year as head coach Bradley led the Metros to the franchise's first final in the Open Cup and to the MLS playoffs. For these accomplishments, he was again nominated MLS Coach of the Year.
In addition to Bradley, Walt Frazier, Ken Daneyko, and Dan Calandrillo will also be honored for their dedication to their respective sports and their ties to the New Jersey sports fan base. This is the 68th banquet held to honor professional and college athletes as well as sports personalities in New Jersey and surrounding areas. These banquets have drawn sold-out crowds every year since its inception making it one of the most popular and elite sports banquets in the nation.
